In recognition of Yom HaShoah on April 18, Downingtown High School West hosted a rededication ceremony for its Holocaust Memorial and a candle-lighting ceremony.
The program included a welcome address by Superintendent Dr. Robert O’Donnell, remarks by third generation Holocaust survivor and current DASD parent Rebecca Zieff, a Yom HaShoah candle-lighting ceremony led by third generation Holocaust survivor and current DASD parent Lannie Hulnick, a rededication led by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director Justin Brown, and a ribbon cutting for the memorial led by Downingtown High School West alumna Roseann Bertone Hausmann.
The Downingtown West Holocaust Memorial was created in 2004 by Hausmann as a tribute to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. It was restored in 2021, and includes a beautiful garden and sun dial installed by students and administrators. Each of the four sides features the names of the survivors who have spoken at the Downingtown Area School District, and a Star of David created by the school’s art department adorns the front.
