Congratulations to Downingtown High School East on being recognized as a 2023 National Banner Unified Champion School by the Special Olympics.
One of only 146 schools across the nation to receive this honor, East was selected due to its inclusive school climate and high sense of collaboration, engagement, and respect for all members of the student body and staff. Further, East has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 national standards of excellence developed by leaders from the education community and Special Olympics.
An extra thank you to autistic support teacher Meghan Funderburg, paraprofessional Anne Marie Matta and students Lauren Valko (Unified athlete) and Jaxon Shillingford (Unified partner). They was formally recognized by the Board of School Directors at the October 11, 2023 School Board Meeting and a school celebration is being planned for November 2023.
