Downingtown Area School District (DASD) proudly hosted its annual Track and Field Day at Kottmeyer Stadium, bringing together student athletes from across the district’s schools to compete and celebrate courage, perseverance, and community spirit.

Now in its fourth year, the event welcomes students in grades kindergarten through post-graduate from Autistic Support, Life Skills, Multiple Disabilities, Language Support, and transition programs. Designed to support a wide range of abilities, the event provides meaningful opportunities for all students to participate in a day centered on fun, friendship, and community connection.

The event began with an opening ceremony that included the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, the Special Olympics Oath, and a symbolic torch run. Student athletes then participated in a variety of track and field activities, including the meter dash, long jump, javelin throw, bowling, and a dance party.

Approximately 275 student athletes took part in the event, supported by 40 teachers, 125 classroom support staff members, 35 related service providers and therapists, and nearly 75 student and community volunteers.

Participating schools included Beaver Creek Elementary, Bradford Heights Elementary, Brandywine Wallace Elementary, Downingtown High School East, Downingtown High School West, Downingtown Middle School, East Ward Elementary, Lionville Elementary, Lionville Middle School, Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center, Pickering Valley Elementary, Springton Manor Elementary, Uwchlan Hills Elementary, and West Bradford Elementary.

Modeled after the Chester County Special Olympics event held at the CCDC in Coatesville, DASD launched its own Track and Field Day four years ago to create a district-wide opportunity for students, staff, and families to come together in recognition of student achievement, school pride, and community connection.

This event reflects the collective efforts of DASD educators, classroom support staff, therapists, families, administrators, School Board members, the Facilities Department, and the Downingtown Music Parents Association, whose contributions help make the day a success for all involved.

“Today is a day of community and celebrating the achievements of all,” said Jennifer Maley, Supervisor of Special Education of Low Incidence K-8 Programs. “It is also a special day for the Special Education Supervisors, as we get to spend the day together supporting the students we advocate for each day.”

The event concluded with closing ceremonies recognizing the accomplishments of student athletes and the dedication of the many volunteers and staff who helped bring the day to life.
