DASD Celebrates Jewish American and AAPI Heritage Month

Jewish American and Asian American and Pacific Islander Month

Throughout the 2024-25 school year, Downingtown Area School District (DASD) has celebrated many of our nation’s month-long observances, offering students and staff meaningful opportunities to come together as a community. This May, DASD continues that commitment by recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month with a series of special programs and activities.

As part of the month’s programming, DASD is partnering with the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center to host a live virtual presentation by Holocaust survivor Dr. Jack Wetter. Wetter will share his powerful story of being born in 1943 in Brussels, Belgium, while his family was in hiding in the basement of a rented apartment building during World War II. Community members are invited to attend this special event on Monday, May 19, at 6:00 PM, to be a part of this important and moving conversation.

“Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month provide us with an important opportunity to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions that have shaped our communities and our nation,” said Justin Brown, DASD Director of Student Relations and School Climate (SRSC). “In DASD, we believe that fostering a culture of respect, belonging, and understanding is essential to student success and community strength. By recognizing these voices, we deepen empathy, broaden perspectives, and reinforce our commitment to ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to thrive.”

Throughout May, students and staff will engage in a variety of events focused on learning about the experiences and achievements of Jewish American and AAPI individuals.
