Dr. Michael Schwartz

Dr. Schwartz is a Biology and Chemistry instructor at the Downingtown STEM Academy. Previous to coming to STEM, Dr. Schwartz spent over twenty-five years in Biomedical research in both academia and in the Biotech sector. He has a wide range of research experience including nerve growth and regeneration, gene expression, development of cell-based assays, and development of a therapeutic drug for the treatment of diabetic complications. He holds several patents relating to these projects. In addition, he has been a project consultant and grant writer for Biotech companies in the Greater Philadelphia area for over 15 years, and maintains an active role in the community.

Dr. Schwartz’ previous teaching experiemces include: the educational coordinator/instructor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Summer Science Academy for talented high school students, judging the Montgomery County Science Fair, and screening scholarship applicants for Delaware Valley Science Council. In addition to working with high school students, Dr. Schwartz has taught at Ursinus College and Penn State Great Valley, and served as a teacher, mentor, and thesis advisor to numerous students at the University of Pennsylvania, The Philadelphia College of Optometry, Arcadia University, and the National University of Singapore.

Dr. Schwartz earned his B.A. with honors in Biochemistry from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University. He and his wife enjoy nature in all its forms, music, and any beach they can find.
