Principal's Updates

  • SC News 3/21/19

    Hello SC Families…

(Big sigh of relief now that my news is out!) Once again…serving as Principal of SC for the last 9 years has been the highlight of my career. #Lovemysharks

Wow, Wow Wow! Literacy Night was a huge success and business at the Book Fair was tremendous! Thanks to our Literacy Specialists, Mrs. Saska and Mrs. DiCecco, along with many teachers for organizing this fun event.

Attention Parents of students in grades 3-5…Please see the attached letter below for information pertaining to the PSSAs.

Did you know? Our teacher of the gifted, Mrs. Fiske, works with students at all grade levels 1-5. She not only works with identified students, but supports enrichment for other students who demonstrate quick acquisition of skills/concepts. I love the flexibility of our staff to meet the needs of all students at all readiness levels.

I am oh so excited for the SC Variety Show to be held on Sat. March 30th. The teachers have put together their own act as well!!! It’s fun to see our students in a different light. #thosecostumes #suchtalent

Shamona Creek students earned 3 awards at the Jonas Salk Science Fair-

High Honors in Botany - Reese Murray (grade 5)

Distinguished Honors in Consumer Science - Vyom Krothapalli (Grade4)

Distinguished Honors in Physics - Anoushka Soni (Grade 4)

Even Watch DOGS have fun at the Creek!

    Happy spring…

Believe it or not, we are starting to plan for the 2019-20 school year. Once again, if you know of any students who will be registering to start at SC in the new school year, please have their parents contact the office to get the ball rolling. This is particularly true for Kdg. and first grade as my staffing hinges on accurate numbers. If your family is moving, please email dtemplin@dasd.org to let us know as well.

In addition, please know that I cannot accept letters requesting specific teachers. I pride myself on the caliber of our staff and I trust each teacher to uphold the high standards we all expect for SC. (Honestly, they all rock!) That being said, if you have a style of teaching that might serve your child best or a situation that requires certain students not be paired together, you may send a letter prior to Spring Break which starts April 17. Please do not ask that your child be placed with specific friends. Part of life is to learn to get along with others and to make new friends. There are ample opportunities for students to be together at lunch, recess and other periods throughout the day. (With over 600 students, I feel that we do a great job of finding the right setting to meet the needs of each child.)

Did you know???  Thanks to your support through the Fun Run, our Home and School Association will have bottle refill stations installed at several of our water fountains! Most children bring water bottles to school and refilling them from the fountain itself is cumbersome. The refill stations will offer filtered water and ease!

Note to Self: If you want to shop with your child at the Book Fair….

The Book Fair will be open Monday and Wednesday Morning at 8:00 AM.

It will also be open during Literacy Night, Tuesday March 19, 6-7:45 PM.

    Hope to see you…Ms. Dragonjac

Fit Fest was a great success as many families enjoyed learning ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to the parents and vendors/volunteers who donated time and materials. (I love that our school is a hub of activity!)

ESARS will be distributed on Monday, March 18. Remember to praise your child for effort and growth. Kids today have too much anxiety and recent research indicates that a lot of that is due to pressure for good grades. We all have strengths and areas to work on. Highlight the growth mindset...what can we do to grow in this area?

    Happy St. Pat’s weekend!

    Way to go Sharks!

Mrs.  Maguire’s 5th grade class was the winning class in the Box Top Competition, with 844 box tops collected!  That averages about 29 box tops/student!  Overall, we collected over 8,000 box tops.  That translates into over $800!  We are so appreciative of your support with this contest.  It such a fun and easy way to earn money for our school!

Note to self…Start a box of books your child has outgrown or is just tired of reading. If you are coming to the Literacy Night, bring them with you for a book swap. Bring 5 and take 5! (or whatever amount…) If there are any left at the end of the night, we will donate to the ESL Family Night so students can select books to encourage reading at home. (Even if you are not coming to Literacy Night, we will gladly accept gently worn books for elementary to young adult for donation. Just send them to the office in care of Mrs. Prokop!) It’s a win/win!

Parents… I want to make you aware of a technology sensation that is going around. It all surrounds an animated figure named Momo who supposedly tells kids to do bad things. The figurine is rather scary and supposedly “pops up” when users are on You Tube or other gaming type devices connected to the internet. First and foremost, I want to assure you that the firewalls in DASD do not allow this type of content to “pop up” on our student devices. This is a problem across the country and you may want to research it on your own. Although students cannot access the actual video at school, they may find information or pictures of Momo on search engines. I think it is important to use this as a learning opportunity. Kids need to know that technology is to be used for the right purposes. If something makes them feel uncomfortable, they should contact an adult right away. I cannot confirm or deny the existence of this Momo video, but I think it is important to stay on top of potential problems. As always…thank you for working in partnership with our school!

    Hello Friends...

It happies my heart to see all of the kindergartners registering this week. ADORABLE! If you have a child or know of someone who is planning to send their child to SC for Kdg. (or any grade actually) please contact the main office for next steps. Conversely, if your family is moving and will not return to SC for the 2019-20 school year, please email me sooner rather than later. Staffing hinges on numbers and I like to get the best teachers for SC! (Sorry, I tell it like it is!!!)

Thanks to all for your patience during the power outage on Monday. The children were fine and everyone just pitched in where needed…including our Watch DOG! I heard a student ask yesterday, “Can we turn the lights off again today? It was fun!” Gotta love kids!!!!

Don’t miss out on the SC Literacy Night held in conjunction with the Scholastic Book Fair.

The Finch robot is an all-in-one bot that comes with leveled programming. The software starts at Level 1 with simple blocks and pictures and levels up to Level 4 allowing for more complex coding and variables. The After School Experience includes different levels to guide your students through the experience of learning to code and build. You must have taken finch 1.0 at least once before taking finch 2.0

The Hummingbird Circuit Board is a versatile robotic component that allows students to build their own robot using recycled materials, the engineering process, and a lot of creativity. The circuit board comes with a variety of components such as different sensors, motors, and lights. Our programs give students the ability to learn about the different components and the basics of building, creating, and engineering. You must have taken Hummingbird 1.0 at least once before taking Hummingbird 2.0

Explore the science of Forensics. Learn how to fingerprint, analyze handwriting, spot the difference between real and counterfeit money, collect evidence, and solve a mystery.

Many of our daily activities involve devices that employ programs created by software developers.  In Coding, students will develop their problem-solving and thinking skill as they learn the concepts of computer coding which can then be used to create their own games and art.
