Principal's Updates

  • SC News 6/5/19

Well, it's here friends...the end of another great school year and my career in education!

What a day! The staff, students and Home and School Board really got me this time. I pride myself on always being aware of what is going on in our school. Not so much I see. 600 students and 70+ staff members surprised me with a birthday/retirement presentation. Students filled a vase with flowers one by one, spoke kind words and sang songs for me. I received a beautiful picture of the whole school that will always warm my heart. It has been an incredible run, but I want the children and teachers to know that they will carry on just fine without me. They have what they need right in their hearts. Thanks for the love and please remember, we have a really good thing going here at SC!

    June 2019

Dear Parent/Guardian of incoming 6th grade student,

The School Health Act of Pennsylvania requires that your child have a physical examination completed upon entrance into sixth grade. Please print the attached form and have it completed by your child’s physician. If the doctor’s office provides you with a signed printout of the examination results or your child has had a camp physical, then a copy of that is acceptable in place of the form provided. Pennsylvania guidelines allow for the examination to take place up to one year prior to your child’s entrance into sixth grade.

We strongly suggest that you retain the original exam for your records and submit a copy to the school nurse. Please return a copy of your child’s physical by September 30th, 2019.

    Hello Parents....

FIELD DAY is on for Thursday! Fingers crossed the rain holds off but if not, we will call an audible. (My husband used that term with me and I looked at him like he was crazy! It is "football speak" for change of plans! AKA…we will figure it out if the rain hits! HA)

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Melanie Susi to SC as your new principal…

Dr. Susi has over 20 years of experience in education.  She was a special education teacher for 2 years prior to coming to Downingtown Area School District.  Since then, she has served DASD as a classroom teacher for 14 years (Lionville Elementary), a Literacy Specialist for 3 years (Lionville Elementary), and an Academic Advisor for 1 year (Lionville Middle School).  She is currently the Assistant Principal at Lionville Elementary.  Dr. Susi has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education, a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership.  She and her husband, Pete, have two children, Harrison (age 14) and Delaney (age 12).  Dr. Susi said she is grateful, honored and excited to be the next Principal at Shamona Creek Elementary School.

I have no doubt that she will carry on our high level of professionalism, student engagement in the learning process and support the positive climate that we have at our wonderful school. (In other words…she will rock it!) Dr. Susi will visit next week to meet students and staff. Stay tuned for more information regarding an opportunity for parents to meet Dr. Susi over the summer.

3rd Grade Regions Fair was ADORABLE…As Always!

I so enjoyed my day with our two Principals for the Day. Ms. Amara and Ms. Sadlier, both in 3rd grade, were truly excellent!

    Hello SC Families….

I so hope you enjoyed time with family over the spring break.

Students in grades 3-5 have now completed the ELA portion of PSSA testing. Woot! I am so proud of each student for taking the time to do his/her very best! Although I do not believe that test scores define the success of a school, I am extremely proud of the academic progress our students make. DASD provides a very rigorous curriculum and SC students have historically done quite well on state and local assessments. #keepitupsharks! We come back from the weekend to tackle Math on Monday for two days and Science on Thursday and Friday for grade 4 only.

Spring Fair is in the air!!!! Just a few reminders from the Principal:

? All students must be accompanied by an adult.

? Everyone is here to have a good time so please remind your child to follow the four SC rules…e respectful, responsible, safe and kind.

? Parking is a challenge, as always. Please use the parking lot at Marsh Creek 6th Grade Center and walk up the hill. Do not park in the fire lane or block others in.

? Although we try to be respectful of food allergies, there may be foods offered that your child cannot tolerate. Please monitor what your child eats accordingly.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers that make this such a successful event. Can’t wait to see you all tomorrow night.

    Norma Jean

The SC Art Show is coming to town on May 8 and 9! Volunteers are needed. Here’s the link to volunteer or check out the attached flyer below.

?Please note that you will be running the station with another parent volunteer in addition to a teacher being with the class at all times.

?We will be on the SCES fields and green top this year.

?Report to your assigned station 10 minutes prior to your field day time.

?If you are running the water station please allow the students to take only one cup! (however, they can refill as many times as needed)

?Dress comfortably. You may want to bring along a water bottle and sunscreen for yourself.

?We are also looking for volunteers to help at our FIRST AID tent! Please refer to the sign-up for the time slots.

?In addition to looking for volunteers to run one of the stations, we are in need of some families to provide a few pop-up canopy tents for the water stations, first aid station and the HSA station. Please refer to the sign up for this as well!
