Ms. Donna Luzenski

Since 1987 Ms. Donna Luzenski has been educating high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Downingtown Area School District.  Imparting a reverence for the English language, engendering student engagement with their work and class discussion, facilitating small group work and research projects, and motivating students to improve their work are the hallmarks of Ms. Luzenski's pedagogy.  Students look forward to Ms. Luzenski's exciting style of teaching and enjoy a respectful, warm, and positive class climate.

In teaching her students the finer points and nuances of the English language, Ms. Luzenski has groomed her students to write effective college essays and to perform well on standardized high stakes tests, SATs, and ACTs.   Many of her students have won, placed in, or received honorable mention in distinguished writing contests or creative arts exhibitions such as the Philadelphia Writing Project, the Mordechai Anielewicz Creative Arts Competition and Exhibition, the Ayn Rand essay contest, and the People's Light and Theater Essay Contest for A Tale of Two Cities.   Ms. Luzenski and several of her students and parents have been honored by the Downingtown Area school Board for their achievements.

Over time the literary content, the number of texts as well as the changes in course curricula for English literature, writing, research, and public speaking have both deepened and widened Ms. Luzenski's knowledge base as well as her treasure trove of materials and resources.  She has a wealth of knowledge and a generous disposition to share her ideas and resources.  For years Ms. Luzenski's enthusiasm for assisting and then organizing, managing, and emceeing the well-regarded and highly distinctive Holocaust Symposium every spring remains unabated.

Ms. Luzenski enjoys helping students with their writing (particularly in Homework Club in the school's library) after school.  In January and February Ms. Luzenski teaches verbal SAT preparatory classes at Downingtown East High School.

Involvement in extra-curricular activities with her students forges a special bond with her students.   Over the years Ms. Luzenski has eagerly chaperoned school-sponsored trips to Philadelphia, New York City, and California as well as many local events such as L.I.N.K. held at Camp Conrad Weiser.  Advising clubs such as the drama club, the speech and debate club, and the break dance club in her early teaching tenure allowed her to know and appreciate her students' talents and zeal for the performing arts.  Chaperoning dances and judging various student contests (whether talent shows, Battle of the Bands, or Mr. East Contests), Ms. Luzenski takes true delight in spirited student events.

In addition to being a veteran teacher in the English department, Ms. Luzenski is also one of East's building representatives for the Downingtown Area Education Association.
