Michael G. Petersen

Mr. Michael Petersen was born and grew up in Wellington, New Zealand. He graduated from Wainuiomata College and enrolled in the Royal New Zealand Army as a regular force cadet (youth entrant). After graduating from the RF Cadet School, Mr. Petersen trained as a mechanical engineer and spent 7 years working for the New Zealand defense forces.

During the summer of 1988, Mr. Petersen competed in the USTA College Amateur Tennis Circuit, where he was offered an opportunity to attend Bloomsburg University. At Bloomsburg, Mr. Petersen continued to play tennis for 4 years while completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Business. During his tennis career, he earned 12 PSAC titles, was a first team All American, and was ranked 12th in the nation. His accomplishments on the court earned his recent nomination into the Bloomsburg University Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating from BU, Mr. Petersen was offered an assistant coaching position at Virginia Tech University. It was at VT where he began work on his Graduate Degree in Health and Physical Education. He completed his teaching certification at West Chester University and started his career in education in the Downingtown Area School District in the fall of 1999.

This is Mr. Petersen’s 19th year working as a Health and PE teacher. Over this course of time, Mr. Petersen has taught at Pickering Valley Elementary, Springton Manor Elementary and is now teaching at West Bradford Elementary. Students in Mr. Petersen’s Health and PE classes are learning concepts and skills that will continue to benefit them every day and throughout the rest of their lives; like new approaches to teamwork, cooperation, problem solving, and lifelong sports and activities.
