English as a Second Language (ESL)

"While a student may not be able to speak English YET, they can still think, feel, and learn."  - Valentia GonzalezStudents are screened for the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program using either the WIDA W-APT or Screener, depending on grade level. Students who qualify for ESL, receive instruction in the domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with an English as a Second Language Program Specialist.

At the elementary level, students are instructed about 30 minutes daily in a pull-out model. Once students enter sixth grade, they may receive direct English instruction and/or content support.

Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) are the basic conversational skills that students acquire first. BICS takes about 1-2 years to acquire. Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) refers to the academic language that students need to be successful in the classroom. CALP takes approximately 5-7 years to acquire.

Each school year, the ESL students take the WIDA ACCESS Test to measure their growth toward English language proficiency. When students meet exit criteria, they are monitored for two years by the ESL Program Specialist to insure the success of students in their classes.
