English Language Development (ELD)

"While a student may not be able to speak English YET, they can still think, feel, and learn."  - Valentina GonzalezStudents are screened for the English Language Development Program (ELD) using the WIDA Screener. Students who qualify for ELD, receive instruction in the domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with an ELD teacher.

At the elementary level, students are instructed about 30 minutes daily in a pull-out model. Once students enter sixth grade, they may receive direct English instruction and/or content support.

Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) are the basic conversational skills that students acquire first. BICS takes about 1-2 years to acquire. Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) refers to the academic language that students need to be successful in the classroom. CALP takes approximately 5-7 years to acquire.

Each school year, English Learners take the WIDA ACCESS to measure their growth toward English language proficiency. When students meet exit criteria, they are monitored for two years by the ELD teacher to insure the success of students in their classes.
