Downingtown Area School District Celebrates Indian Heritage Month and Native American Heritage Month

As part of its ongoing commitment to fostering belonging and a positive school environment, Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is excited to announce its annual celebration of Indian Heritage Month and Native American Heritage Month throughout November.

Celebrations for Indian Heritage Month began on October 17 at Bradford Heights Elementary School and will continue district-wide in November. Community members volunteered their time to teach students and staff about traditional cuisine, dance, and culture. Although not federally recognized, DASD highlights the achievements of South Asians locally and globally. As the Asian community represents the largest minority group in DASD, and Upper Uwchlan Township is home to one of Pennsylvania’s highest Asian populations, the district values honoring the many cultures that make up this community.

Celebrations for Native American Heritage Month began in October with visits to all ten elementary schools from author and storyteller Robin Moore. Robin guided students step-by-step as they built a 16-foot tipi, which was then used as a teaching space. Most recently, Barbara “Bluejay” Michalski, a tribal council leader of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, visited Uwchlan Hills Elementary School. Bluejay shared the history and traditions of the Lenape Nation, giving students the opportunity to play traditional games and explore Lenape artifacts and musical instruments.

Justin Brown, DASD's Director of Student Relations and School Climate (SRSC), said, “It is important for students to experience and learn from people of all backgrounds. It’s truly inspiring to see their curiosity, engagement, and appreciation as they explore different cultures.”

DASD schools have planned a variety of engaging activities that invite students, families, and community members to explore Indian and Native American cultures through music, cuisine, and traditional customs.
