DASD Schools celebrate MLK Day of Service with students and staff giving back to the community

Students across Downingtown Area School District (DASD) turned a day off from school into a day on for giving back in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. From assembling care packages to collecting essential items, students participated in a variety of projects that supported local families and community organizations.

  • Beaver Creek Elementary prepared care packages for CONCERN, a local nonprofit supporting children, youth, and families.
  • Brandywine Wallace Elementary prepared donations and cards for the Community Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA) in Coatesville.
  • Downingtown High School West and East Ward Elementary School teamed up to assemble donation kits with meals, winter clothing, and other essentials for local families in need.
  • Lionville Middle School hosted a month-long essentials drive for Fostering Hope Chester County, providing needed items to support foster families.
  • Shamona Creek Elementary partnered with The Giving Tree to create morning snack bags and handmade cards for individuals receiving support from Meals on Wheels.
  • Uwchlan Hills Elementary students contributed 875 pounds of food for the Chester County Food Bank, assembled 64 care bags for Safe Harbor of Chester County, created 45 handmade heart quilt blocks, made dozens of native plant seed bombs to add pollinator plants to the community, wrote dozens of cards for community members, and donated a bag of handmade toys for animals at To Love a Canine Rescue.

“These activities gave students a chance to experience the power of giving back and make a real difference in our community,” said Lauren Raines, assistant principal at Downingtown High School West. “I’m proud of Downingtown West and East Ward Elementary students and staff for teaming up to assemble donation kits for local families. It’s inspiring to see all our students and staff embrace Dr. King’s message and put it into action.”

“By participating in this Day of Service, the DASD community not only honors Dr. King’s legacy, but also learns from one another and helps foster meaningful connections across the district,” said Justin Brown, Director of Student Relations and School Climate.

Through these projects, DASD students demonstrated how even small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact on the community.
