Students from Downingtown High School West recently visited the West Brandywine Township Police Department as part of the Making Connections program, which helps foster meaningful relationships between students and local law enforcement. The initiative, held in partnership with Downingtown Area School District’s (DASD) Office of Student Relations and School Climate (SRSC), supports DASD’s commitment to building trust, mutual respect, and open dialogue in the community.

During the visit, students toured the police department, observing officers at work and learning about daily operations. They also watched demonstrations of training exercises and equipment used in everyday policing. These activities gave students a deeper understanding of officers’ responsibilities, public safety practices, and how law enforcement serves the community.

The visit included an interactive lunch with officers, providing a casual setting for students to ask questions and engage in conversation about policing, safety, and community expectations.

“My experience was really informative,” said Downingtown High School West student Jimmy Neal. “[Police officers] only have a fraction of a second to make decisions that can impact the community, so it gave me insight into the challenges they face.”

The Making Connections program continues to offer students valuable opportunities to engage with local law enforcement and strengthen positive relationships within the community.
