The Downingtown High School East (DHSE) chapter of Best Buddies International hosted its 13th annual “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign on Friday, September 19, just before the East football game.

Students and community members were invited to wear red, white, and blue to show support for belonging and acceptance. The campaign, led by Best Buddies International and the Special Olympics, raises awareness about the harmful effects of the “R-word” and promotes acceptance for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

About Best Buddies
Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering one-to-one friendships between people with and without IDD. These meaningful connections help improve quality of life and create inclusive communities.

Honorary Captains
As part of the event, the East football team honored two Best Buddies members, juniors Aditya Amirisetti and Tanner Aman, as honorary captains, giving them the opportunity to participate in all pre-game activities.

“At Downingtown Area School District, we believe that every student deserves a place where they feel they truly belong,” said Meghan Davis, DHSE Autistic Support Teacher. “Programs like this empower our students to take a stand for respect and belonging, creating a school culture that celebrates each person’s unique contributions.”

DHSE English Teacher Amy Rowe added: "Belonging is at the heart of who we are in DASD. By participating in initiatives like ‘Spread the Word to End the Word,’ our students see firsthand the power of their voice and the impact of empathy. This event reminds students, staff, and families alike, that we all have a role in ensuring every member of our community has a place to call home.”

The DHSE Best Buddies chapter meets regularly throughout the school year, with the football game being one of several meaningful events that help students foster friendships and promote belonging.
