Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is proud to celebrate Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month this April, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a culture of belonging and understanding.
Autism awareness and acceptance initiatives have expanded globally since 2007, when the United Nations General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day. National Autism Awareness Month, first recognized by the Autism Society in the 1970s, continues to inspire organizations worldwide to promote education, advocacy, and community engagement.
Throughout April, DASD schools will host a variety of activities designed to encourage students, parents, and the community to learn, engage, and celebrate neurodiversity. Highlights include school assemblies, district-wide initiatives like the Eagles Coin Challenge supporting the Eagles Autism Foundation, and interactive activities such as “Bubbles of Kindness,” all designed to promote belonging and empathy.
The DASD School Climate and Student Engagement Teams, led by Director of Student Relations and School Climate (SRSC) Justin Brown, have organized a series of events to encourage meaningful discussions and participation. “These events provide valuable opportunities for students and staff to celebrate neurodiversity, build understanding, and foster connections,” said Brown. “Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month is a time to recognize and uplift the unique strengths of every student.”
