There is strong research demonstrating that readiness in Kindergarten ensures long-term success in school. Skills like following directions, managing emotions and getting along with others, in addition to pre-reading and number skills have long-term implications for future success in school and in life.
COVID has had a devastating impact on education, and most especially on our youngest learners. Socializing plays an important role in their development, from learning to share, to honing their language skills. But with social distancing measures in place, many kids have missed out on opportunities to play and learn. Additionally, many students did not have the opportunity for a preschool experience during the pandemic.
The Downingtown Education Foundation is partnering with DASD principals and teachers to bring JumpStart to incoming Kindergarteners at the schools they will be attending. Students will increase their familiarity with school routine, decrease levels of anxiety about starting school and identify any areas of needed support. Students will have a terrific opportunity to have a “jump start” on their kindergarten experience.
