Instrument Options

  • Flute     Listen
    Played by blowing across the tone hole to produce the sound. Made of metal and makes a pleasing, soft, high pitched sound. The flute is not heavy and suited for students of all sizes.



    Clarinet     Listen 
    Played with a single reed (a thin piece of wood) that vibrates when you blow air into the clarinet. Made of wood or plastic and makes a very nice, pleasing, warm, lower sound. The clarinet is not heavy and suited for students of all sizes. Good to have many clarinets in a band.


    Saxophone     Listen 
    Played with a single reed (a thin piece of wood) that vibrates when you blow air into the saxophone. Made of brass or similar metal and makes a louder, warm, and lower sound. The saxophone is the heaviest woodwind instrument and is best suited for taller students, particularly with larger hands. A neckstrap is used to help hold the instrument.


    Trumpet      Listen 
    Played by putting your lips together and buzzing them into the mouthpiece as you blow air into the trumpet. Made of brass or similar metal and makes a loud, pleasing, high pitched sound. The trumpet is not heavy and is suited for students of all sizes. Good to have many trumpets in the band!


    French Horn      Listen 
    Played by putting your lips together and buzzing them into the mouthpiece as you blow air into the french horn. Made of brass or similar metal and makes a very nice, pleasing, warm sound. The french horn is slightly heavy and requires the student to balance the bell on their knee. Very difficult instrument to learn, but good for students who like a challenge. 

    Trombone     Listen 
    Played by putting your lips together and buzzing them into the mouthpiece as you blow air into the trombone. Only instrument in the band that uses a slide to play different notes! Made of brass or similar metal and makes an awesome, loud, low sound. The trombone is slightly heavy and best suited for taller students, particularly with longer arms to help move the slide. Good to have many trombones in the band!

    Baritone     Listen 
    Played by putting your lips together and buzzing them into the mouthpiece as you blow air into the baritone. Made of brass or similar metal and makes an awesome, loud, low sound. The baritone is slightly heavy and best suited for taller students due to the size. Good to have many baritones in the band!

    Percussion     Listen 
    Played by striking (tapping) to create many different sounds from high to very low depending on the instrument. Percussion students will learn MANY different instruments, including snare drum, bass drum, suspended cymbal, triangle, tambourine, claves, maracas, crash cymbals, sleigh bells, and many others.
