The Pennsylvania Child Labor Law, Act 151 of 2012 resulted in changes to Work Permit Application. All students between the ages of 14 and 17 are required by Pennsylvania School Law to secure an Employment certificate, known as "Working Papers," before they may begin to work. Students, who have reached 18, by state law, do not need working papers. Under the current Pennsylvania Child Labor Act, only one type of work permit is issued. This is a wallet-size, transferable work permit, which is valid from the time of issuance until the minor turns 18 years of age. The minor provides a copy to the employer and retains the original.

Prior restrictions to the work permit application process due to COVID have been lifted and we have returned to the regular work permit process and they are no longer allowed to be processed electronically.  You may use the following link to download the Work Permit Application (PDF).  Please bring the form to the High School Main Office and provide a copy of the required proof of age such as one item listed below:

    • Birth Certificate
    • Passport
    • Driver’s license
    • Learner’s permit

The application and the proof of age will need to be presented to the Issuing Officer at Downingtown West’s Main Office.  Students must be present to sign the working permit in the presence of the Issuing Officer prior to providing a copy to their employer.

Any questions, please contact West's Main Office at 610-269-4400.  Please note our office hours change during the summer to 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Mondays thru Thursdays, as we are closed on Fridays.
