Mr. Adam Speakman

Mr. Speakman joined the staff at DHS East as Choral Director in 2006, where he is now the Building Leader for the music department. His current teaching duties include conducting eight choral ensembles, teaching AP music theory, and serving as the Vocal Director for musical theater productions. Many of his individual students have been selected to perform in PMEA/NAfME District, Region, All-State, All-Eastern, and All-National Choral Ensembles. His choirs have appeared in many special performance venues throughout the United States and Europe, such as Carnegie Hall, Basilica of Sant’Agostino (Rome), Lobkowicz Palace (Prague), Thomaskirche (Leipzig), St. Stephen's (Vienna), St. Patrick's (Dublin), and Notre Dame (Paris) Cathedrals.

Notable contributions to the music program in the DASD include writing curriculum and obtaining College Board accreditation for the district's AP Music Theory program, establishing the Tri-M Music Honor Society, creating an international touring Chamber Choir, sponsoring an annual Barbershop Festival that is nationally recognized and attended by students and professionals throughout the mid-Atlantic states, extensive local community service performances, performance collaboration with several collegiate ensembles, workshops and masterclass opportunities with many university professors, commissioning and exhibition of new works by modern composers, consistently earning top ratings in national choral competitions, and writing and receiving numerous grants to provide more resources and opportunities for his students.

Mr. Speakman is also a published arranger whose works are often debuted by the Downingtown East Choirs. He is in high demand as a mentor for student teachers from local universities and engages his high school students to take an active role in their learning through opportunities to conduct, compose, and arrange for the choirs under his supervision. Mr. Speakman is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, the American Choral Directors Association, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, the Technology Institute for Music Educators, the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America.

In 2018 he was the high school recipient of the Citadel Heart of Learning Award in Chester County, PA. In 2019 his Masterworks Choir was selected as a performing ensemble to appear at the PMEA Annual Conference. In 2020 Downingtown East was one of only 148 schools in the country to receive a SupportMusic Merit Award from the NAMM foundation for its commitment to music education.

The European Cultural Initiative for the Young Generation has recognized Mr. Speakman for his artistic excellence, intellectual engagement, and contributions to the global network of culture, peace, and mutual respect between the world’s people. He has received citations from both the Pennsylvania State Senate and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for his dedication, care, and leadership in preparing his students for life-long challenges as well as his high professional standards, vision, energy and enthusiasm for teaching.
